Wax & Soot Removal

If there is a question and/or answer you would like to submit, please email me.

Q: How do I remove wax from carpet?
A: Place a brown paper bag over the wax. Using a moderately hot iron, iron over the bag to melt the wax. The bag will absorb the wax. If there is a large amount of wax, you'll need to use several bags as they become saturated with wax.
Please note: If you do this, test a piece of carpet first in a hidden area to insure it can handle the heat without melting the fibers.

Q: How do I remove soot from a frosted glass holder?
A: Some of the suggestions we have collected are: Toothpaste, a product called "Goo Gone", "Fantastik" cleaner. Latest suggestion is to use "Oxy Clean". Several have vouched for its effectiveness - especially for frosted cups. Do not use nail polish remover or alcohol.

More great suggestions:

"You can tell I have kids (lol) -- I find baby wipes very effective. I mean, if they're gentle enough for babies, why not PL products? They really do work nicely. Just be sure to "pat dry after wiping," but omit the powder :)."

"I just had to remove a burn mark off a lamp and a little comet on a wet cloth and it scrubbed right off and didn't scratch. Maybe soft scrub would work too?"

To clean wax from Crystal and Frosted Glass: "First fill with hot water to remove the large amount of wax. Let cool to room temperature. Remove the wax floating on the top. Then take a warm damp rag, a terry cloth rag would work best, and dip into baking soda. Scrub the baking soda around in a circular motion. Rinse and repeat if necessary. I first tried it on my quilted crystal pair. WOW!!! Did they shine!!!

Q: How do I remove wax from a wood table?
A: I have found the best way to do this is to scrape the wax off with a plastic spatula, or one of the PC pan scrapers. Then, I follow that with a good PledgeTM waxing of the table.

More great suggestions!:

"I have found that if you use Avon Skin So SoftTM it will take off wax that is spilt on counter tops or tables."

"I use a product from Wal-Mart called DeSolve-It. It comes in a spray bottle and is non-Toxic. They even used it in Alaska for the big oil spill! This product is great for any wax removal. I experienced this when my son put a crayon in his pocket and it went into the dryer. Wax on everything. I used DeSolve-It on the wax, washed in warm water, and to my surprise took all of the crayon out! It is awesome! - I even use it on my display tablecloths when wax accidentally gets on them!"

Q: How do I remove wax stains from terra cotta?
A: "this may sound crazy but I used water pipe cleaner that I found at a local smoke shop and it looks as good as new (Dr. Greens was the cleaner name)"

Here's a helpful tip about terra cotta:

If you spray your terra cotta pieces with Pam cooking spray before putting them outside, it helps keep the green off the bottom and helps repel wax spills. It doesn't work 100% w/ the wax."
